Core Tip: Brazilian exports of processed beef to the US have nearly doubled in a year, according to latest statistics.
Brazil exported 1,570 tons of processed beef to the US in June, an increase of 96.4% year-on-year, and a 12% increase on May 2012 levels. This increase meant that sales to the US represented 16.2% of Brazil’s total processed beef exports last month and were worth $18.4m to Brazilian exporters.

The figures suggest that Brazilian exports are recovering from an embargo implemented by the US in 2010 after illegal levels of the broad-based anti-parasitic animal drug ivermectin were detected in Brazilian beef shipments. The US removed the embargo in January 2011.

Fernando Sampaio, executive director of the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporters (Abiec), said: “The industry has redoubled care in the use of anthelmintic in cattle and, furthermore, the US did not find another market to replace the processed parts purchased in Brazil.”
