Core Tip: The blue and red crab fisheries have been closed again from 15 August to 15 September, 2012, to protect consumers from a build up of harmful calcium oxalate.
The Assistant Secretary for Fish Resources, Jimmy Martinez Ortiz, said the move is intended to protect the species and consumers as during this period, the crustaceans enter a stage of change, generating high concentrations of calcium oxalate, an element harmful to human health.

He said it is prohibited in all national territory to capture, transport, possess, process and market the crabs.

Seizures Control Directorate of Fisheries Resources SRP presented the results of the first crab closure for reproduction which took place 15 January to 15 February this year.

Molke Mendoza Avila, Director of Fishery Resources Control has called on citizens to respect the ban.
