Core Tip: Farmers and fishers organized under the Municipal Agriculture and Fishery Councils (MAFCs) and the Provincial Agriculture and Fishery Council (PAFC) stand to benefit from its programs and services.
In an interview, Anita Taran, provincial agriculturist, said that an organized group is able to tap resources from other agencies.

During the recent Samar farmers and fisherfolks congress, free equipment were distributed by the provincial government. Among these were 10 motorboat engines raffled off to island and coastal municipalities.

Roger Leyte, municipal agriculturist of Tagapul-an, an island town, said that his 11-man team went home with the motorboat engine.

Aside from the motorboat engines, Samar Governor Sharee Ann Tan also gave out 40 sprayers, bags of seeds for pinakbet brand of vegetables, 30 mold board plows and financial assistance to insure their crops and livestock through the PAFC.

The farmers were also given fare for their travel to attend the congress.

Through the farmers involvement in the council, the National Agriculture and Fishery Council (NAFC) recognized the group and its effort to upgrade its members knowledge in farming and fishing.

Andy Olgado, NAFC chairman, promised to assist the council, said Ms Taran.

Moreover, through the PAFC, farmers and fishers can also gain additional knowledge through the "Techno-Gabay" center from the Agriculture Training Institute.

The Techno-Gabay Program develops modalities for delivering information and technology services in agriculture, forestry and natural resources sectors.

“It will really be best for the farmers and fisherfolks to join the MAFC, and with the recent attendance in the congress, Governor Tan is satisfied that the provincial government is able to address the concerns of the agriculture and fishery sector,” Ms Taran said.
