Australia puts up funds to improve pork production

Core Tip: Funding is up for grabs as Australian pork bosses invite proposals for projects to help innovate and improve pork production.
The CRC for High Integrity Australian Pork (Pork CRC) is looking to fund short-term projects across four areas: confinement-free sow and piglet management, herd health management, healthy pork consumption and carbon-conscious nutrient inputs and outputs. The organisation said the projects would be funded for 12 months to a maximum of AUS$50,000.


Dr Roger Campbell, CEO of Pork CRC, said: “Innovation projects may fill knowledge gaps or investigate new science and theories that might develop system-changing information and technologies.”

All applications need to be lodged no later than 17 September 2012, and each will be assessed on the impact of the proposed outcomes on the Australian pork industry, the novelty of the research, the potential to develop intellectual property, the quality of the science and experimental approach, the budget and the track record of the researcher or research team to deliver outcomes on time and within budget.

Pork CRC is also inviting commercialisation projects, which will identify and develop new income streams. Dr Campbell said: “Commercialisation proposals will have the same budget and time-frame as innovation proposals, will be judged on their commercial potential and will be reviewed by members of the Pork CRC’s Commercialisation and Adoption Committee.”
