South Korea's fisheFishries output grew 1.6 per cent in the first half of this year from a year earlier thanks to increased deep-water catches, government data showed Thursday.

Fisheries production amounted to 1.81 million tons in the January-June period, up from the previous year's 1.74 million tons, according to data from Statistics Korea.

Deep-water fishing jumped 21.6 per cent on-year to 361,000 tons, while fishing farm output shrank four per cent as relatively high temperatures in coastal areas hurt the seaweed harvest, the data showed, YonhapNewsAgency reports.

The estimated value of the catches declined from a year earlier due to more catches of low-priced fish.

The first-half output is valued at 3.37 trillion won ($3.29 billion), down 1.1 per cent from the same period last year, according to the data.
