Second Closure of Small Pelagic Fisheries Begins

Core Tip: The Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Guillermo Moran Velázquez, has reported that in accordance with the Ministerial Agreement 047, small pelagic fish will now be closed.
The closure comes as part of the management measures established by the Undersecretary of Fisheries, from the 1 - 30 September. 

During this period it is prohibited to capture or transport species such as sardines or alewife, mackerel, chuhueco, leaf, mackerel, among others. 

The purse seine fleet of small pelagic must remain in port, said Mr Moran. 

Molke Avila Mendoza, director of Fishery Resources Control reported that in the first period of closure, between the 1 - 31 March, 2012, they seized 55 pounds of alewife and 41,000 pounds of other pelagic caught illegally.
