Core Tip: Spanish and Dutch authorities have added to the growing list of countries issuing warnings against the pre-workout and weight loss stimulant, DMAA (dimethylamylimine/ methylhexanamine).
The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition and the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority noted stroke, nausea and other effects in warning consumers off products containing DMAA including Jack3d, Lipo6 Black Hemo-Rage and Neurocore.

The Spanish agency said authorities were,
“conducting necessary investigations to proceed with the withdrawal from the market.”

In the meantime the agency is,
“advising consumers to refrain from consuming dietary supplements containing this substance.”

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority said athletes especially should not consume the products given DMAA’s existence on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited substance list.

“DMAA containing products are often sold as dietary supplements through online shops that specialise in fitness/bodybuilding - or slimming products. DMAA may have effects on heart rate and blood vessels and is often combined with caffeine.”

It added:
“A safe consumption level for DMAA has not been established.”

DMAA actions

The countries join a long list of nations moving against DMAA that includes Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, Canada, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, France, Italy and Malta.

But USPlabs, the maker of the most popular supplement, Jack3d, continues to defend the sourcing (geranium plant) and safety of the ingredient, although it has released a DMAA-free version of Jack3d in response to the global crackdown.

Other brands named by the Spanish agency included Spriodex, Napalm, Tested Burner, Mass Pump3D, Presurge Unleashed, Beta-Cret Extreme, Noxpum, Black Bombs Thermogenic Detonator, Dexaprine, Maximise, Endoburn, HydroxyStim, Neurocore, Mesomorph and OxyElite.
