Core Tip: East meets West in DSM’s new Fusion Blend offering at Vitafoods Asia 2012

[September 5th, 2012, Hong Kong, China] Vitafoods Asia 2012 – a three-day grand exhibition of nutraceutical ingredients and functional foods – debuts on September 5 at AsiaWorld-Expo, Hong Kong. DSM (Royal DSM N.V.), the global leader for materials and life science, will present five Fusion Blend innovative optimization formulas and three new Health Benefits Solutions, sharing its latest innovations in nutritional ingredients to customers and partners in China and the Asia Pacific region. Fusion Blend – the first innovative combination of TCM herbals and vitamin ingredients
DSM’s signature Fusion Blend series, featuring a combination of traditional Chinese herbal elements and various vitamins, incorporates traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) concepts with modern life sciences. Aimed at addressing common consumer concerns, the Fusion Blend series includes 5 optimization formulas: Defy your age, Nourish your beauty, Enhance your immunity, Upgrade your vision and Guard your heart.

For instance, for Defy your age, DSM combines antioxidant-rich mulberry with palmleaf raspberry fruit to increase the content of Vitamin E and superoxide dismutase, which effectively diminishes free radicals created by histocytic cells from aging organisms, thus realizing “rejuvenation”.
The Fusion Blend series represents a perfect combination of Chinese essential herbal traditions and western advanced nutritional technology. It appeals to Chinese customers and is well-catered to consumers’ demand for healthcare and functional food.
“The Fusion Blend series marks another milestone in the nutrition and healthcare industry as it makes traditional herbals complementary to modern nutritious ingredients,” said Mr. Leo Xie Lei, Vice President of DSM Nutritional Products’ Human Nutrition and Health business in China.
“DSM has been the leader in the global nutritional ingredients and healthy food industry for the past 70 years. In recent years, DSM has innovated healthcare concepts to deliver high-quality and reliable formulas and products for Chinese customers.
“DSM’s commitment to innovation is reflected in the Fusion Blend series, which I believe will drive rapid growth in the healthcare industry in the Asia Pacific region, especially in China.”
Three newly-launched Health Benefit Solutions
In addition, DSM has just launched three new Health Benefit Solutions across the world: “Essentials for vegetarians”, “Energize your mind” and “Relax your mind”. “Essentials for vegetarians” contains the necessary functional ingredients that are often lacking in vegetarian diets, such as life’sDHA™ (a form of Omega-3 DHA derived from algae), calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, protein, etc.

“Energize your mind” and “Relax your mind” focus on two key areas of mind health: wakefulness and energy and relaxation and sleep, specifically apt for middle-aged people and office workers; mixing ginkgo leaf extract, coenzyme Q10, lemon mint and chamomile. Those ingredients are available individually or as part of a customized Quali®-Blends premix, delivering tailor-made nutrient blends that meet manufacturers’ individual needs.
At the exhibition, Mr. Pieter Nuboer, Vice President for DSM’s Human Nutrition and Health business for the Asia Pacific region, told reporters: “As a bellwether in the vitamin, nutrition premix and functional food ingredients manufacturing industry, DSM is committed to producing innovative, safe and healthy nutrients to satisfy various consumers’ demands across the globe.
“Vitafoods Asia offers an excellent platform, enabling us to demonstrate our cutting-edge life sciences, to directly communicate with clients about latest research and innovations, and to share our views on future trends in the global healthcare and nutrition industry. DSM is hoping to expand communication channels via exhibitions to introduce more innovative and high value-added solutions to China and other Asia Pacific markets, and ensure sustainable growth and a win-win situation for all.”
Earlier this week, on September 3, DSM launched a global vitamin D deficiency map the company initiated in partnership with the International Osteoporosis Foundation, the world’s largest patient organization. The map is aimed at increasing awareness on the topic of vitamin D deficiency around the world, including large parts of Asia – a cause championed by DSM in light of increasing scientific evidence supporting the wide range of health benefits of optimal vitamin D status.

With years of experience and constant commitment to product innovation, DSM will spare no effort to fuel the development of nutraceutical foods and functional foods industry to benefit populations in China and the rest of the Asia Pacific region.
