Core Tip: Subway and Wienerschnitzel became the latest fast food chains to phase out the use of gestation crates in their supply chains.
Subway recently announced its initiative aimed at eliminating gestation crates. On the company’s website, Subway said it supports eliminating crates and have already removed them from the company’s pork suppliers in the United Kingdom.

“Also, our pork suppliers in the US have begun to transition to a more humane process including the elimination of gestation crates and anticipate having this process completed within the next 10 years,” the company said. “We will continue to work with suppliers who share our commitment to phasing out gestation stalls as quickly as possible, putting traceability systems in place and using the best animal welfare and handling practices.”

Wienerschnitzel, a chain of hot dog restaurants, also announced its intention to source pork from suppliers with documented plans to end use of gestation crates, according to a release on The Humane Society of the United States website.

“The move toward a gestation crate-free environment is consistent with Wienerschnitzel’s commitment to provide the highest-quality food, and we support the efforts of pork suppliers to ultimately eliminate the use of gestation crates,” said Alan Cline, director of purchasing and product development for Wienerschnitzel. “Moving forward, we will be requesting from our pork suppliers their plans to phase out the use of gestation crates from their supply chains by 2022.”

According to HSUS, major food companies and retailers that have announced intentions to eliminate gestation crates from their supply chains include: McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Costco, Kroger, Safeway, Kraft (Oscar Mayer), Heinz, Campbell Soup, Denny’s, Cracker Barrel, Carl’s Jr., Hardee’s, Sonic, Baja Fresh, Kmart, Compass Group, Aramark, Sysco and Sodexo.
