Florida-based firm Omega3 Innovations has developed a new line of cookies and chocolate products containing fish oil-based omega-3 and glucan oat soluble fibre.
Biotechnology company Omega3 Innovations said that it had spent several years researching how to combine the ingredients into a functional food product that “bridges the gap between food and medicine”.
“With our patented formulation, we were able to stabilize the oil to prevent it from separating and going rancid during the manufacturing process,” said Dr Bo Martinsen, Omega3 Innovations’ co-founder.
The cookies and chocolate contain omega-3 sourced from Norwegian cod. Each portion contains up to a prescription-sized dose of omega-3 oil (2-4g EPA/DHA), as well as 750 mg of cholesterol-reducing soluble oat fibre - two ingredients that have been linked to reduced risk of heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes.
“The patented technology also allows us to add antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and other nutrients in unprecedented dosages, without compromising taste and nutritional value of our omega-3 foods. We also avoid the need for preservatives and sweeteners in our omega-3 chocolates, omega-3 cookie products and other snacks,” added Dr Anne-Marie Chalmers, Omega3 Innovations’ co-founder.
