French wine industrialist Bernard Magrez is set to purchase Sauternes first-growth Clos Haut-Peyraguey estate from the Pauly family for an undisclosed amount.
Situated on the Bommes plateau in the Bordeaux region, France, the 39.5 acre estate has an annual production rate of 28,000 bottles. It mainly produces 1er grand cru classe Sauterne.
In Spring 2012, Magrez purchased 35.5 acre Chateau de Malleprat in Pessac-Leognan and 27 acre Chateau Moulin d'Ulysse in Listrac. The current purchase will make him owner of 40th estate.
Magrez said they were already the owners of a chateau in Sauternes, but their high-end Asian clients wanted a Sauternes grand cru classe or a premier grand cru classe.
Clos Haut-Peyraguey owner and manager Martine Langlais-Pauly said the sale was not yet official, but expected it to finalize by the end of the year.
Clos Haut-Peyraguey will join Magrez portfolio that comprises of estates like Chateau Fombrauge in St Emilion, Chateau Pape Clement in Graves and Chateau La Tour Carnet, a fourth-growth in the Medoc and others.
