The demand of agrifood in India is set to increase by 136% between 2009 and 2050, an Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) report said.

According to the new report named, 'What India wants: Analysis of India's food demand to 2050,' this increase in demand reflects the strong income and population growth across the continent.

ABARES executive director Karen Schneider said: "Increasing income levels in India have led to a diversification of diets, with rising per person consumption of dairy products, fruit and vegetables.

"Combined with a population growth rate that is one of the highest in Asia, that means food demand will increase significantly."

With the present agricultural policies of the country, it is estimated that the fruit industry will grow 246%, while the vegetables and dairy products will see an increase of 183% and 137%, respectively in consumption during the assessed period.

Given this, India will see a total of 77% growth in food consumption by 2050, the report stated.

"India's growth in agrifood imports toward 2050 is predominantly driven by vegetables, which are projected to reach $47bn by 2050, in 2009 US dollars," Schneider added.

The import of fruits will reach $58bn, while dairy products and wheat's imports will be pegged at $13bn and $15bn, respectively.

The new report is part of the What Asia wants series that analyses future food consumption and trade trends in Asian countries.
