US authorities have seized dietary supplements and unapproved drugs from New York-based firm Confidence after company was found to be making unfounded health claims.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that the firm had claimed that its products could treat diseases such as brain atrophy, kidney dysfunction and gangrene. The agency had seized several Confidence dietary supplements including Dr Brain, pH Balance and Glucosamine Plus after finding the company had breached labelling and directional use regulations.

Confidence is also accused of failing to meet current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) regulations for dietary supplements.

"This firm made unfounded claims to consumers. Products with unapproved disease claims are dangerous because they may cause consumers to delay or avoid legitimate treatments," said Melinda K Plaisier, FDA’s acting associate commissioner for regulatory affairs.

"The FDA is committed to protecting consumers from the dangers of unapproved products on the market. We will continue to take aggressive enforcement actions against companies that do not meet federal standards for safety, effectiveness and quality."

No health issues have been linked to the use of Confidence products but the FDA said that any illness or side effects should be reported immediately.

Confidence has not commented on the action though a statement on its website says the firm meets cGMP regulations and that the firm maintains the highest standards in the production of its supplements and drugs. The company claims to make over 150 products for 21 different global markets.
