Core Tip: A sausage factory which employs 150 people is to close, it has been confirmed.
A campaign was mounted to save the Freshlink Foods plant in the Shettleston area of Glasgow. But Freshlink, part of ABP Food Group, announced that with "great regret" production will stop early next year.

The work is expected to be transferred to Yorkshire over the next few weeks and months. Trade union Usdaw said about 150 workers at the Glasgow plant will be affected.

Local politicians reacted angrily to the closure, accusing the firm of having "little enthusiasm" for keeping the site open. Glasgow Shettleston MSP John Mason said: "I'm extremely disappointed at the company's decision and know that this will come as a bitter blow to staff at the site.

"It is difficult not to conclude that Freshlink had little enthusiasm for finding a solution that would keep jobs in Glasgow, as the company persistently only sent a junior manager to the taskforce aimed at saving jobs. Having been part of that taskforce for the last four months, I know that substantial offers of help and assistance were put forward."

Glasgow Labour MSP Drew Smith said: "The taskforce and, particularly, the workers' representatives worked hard to offer solutions that would save these jobs. I have no doubt that there were options, such as public support for a brand new factory, which would have have delivered even greater profits to ABP Foods in the long term.

"But the cruel fact is it never looked like we've had meaningful engagement or a willingness by the company to accept any offer of support that might require them to spend a penny more. My heart goes out to all of the loyal staff at Freshlink. It is them and their families who will be devastated by this decision, especially this close to Christmas."

A stakeholder group involving the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council, union and company representatives and others was set up to try to save the site. But Freshlink Foods announced it was to close.

A spokesman said: "Freshlink Foods would like to recognise and thank the stakeholders taskforce, the Scottish Government and the various agencies involved for their considerable efforts throughout this process. As part of the continuing consultation process, employees will be given assistance and support as they seek alternative employment, to include other opportunities within the wider group."

The closure of the Freshlink site comes just over two weeks after it was confirmed that a meat processing plant employing 1,700 people was to shut down. Last month the Dutch food group Vion, which owns Hall's of Broxburn in West Lothian, rejected two last-minute bids to save the factory. Enterprise Minister Fergus Ewing described the closure of Freshlink's Glasgow site as "very disappointing news" for the staff there and their families.
