The researchers at the Queensland Department of Agriculture are developing a new hybrid fruit pina-colada type fruit, which is a combination of pineapple and coconut.

The department has been involved in the development of the AusFestival pineapple since 10 years and the fruit is currently in the final stages of the development.

Senior horticulturalist Garth Senewski said that the fruit will be sweet, aromatic and will have low acidity, reported the ausfoodnews.com.au.

The AusFestival pineapple will be an addition to other hybrid fruits including a papple that is a cross between a pear and an apple, launched by UK scientists in May 2012.
