Mumbaikars hoping to celebrate Christmas with cake may have to shell out 10-20 per cent more on the baked goodie than they did last year. The hike in ingredient rates has compelled bakers in the city to raise the price of the finished product.
Hemali Shah, proprietor, Chocolate House, Santacruz, said, “I have been baking chocolates as well as cakes for Diwali and Christmas for the last five years. Earlier the rates of ingredients were not so high, but of late, tey have increased. The hike leaves us with no option but to hike the prices of cakes by 10-20 per cent.”
She added, “However, I bake homemade cakes which are affordable. I get a lot of orders from Christian families all over Mumbai for cakes during Christmas. We at Chocolate House make all types of cakes and chocolates for Christmas.”
Imran Hamidani, director, Fine Chocolate Beryl's Gourmet, said, “The ingredients which are used in ckaes have increased this Christmas. We will have to increase our cake prices by at least 10 per cent, otherwise we will incur a loss. But since it is a big celebration for Christians, they have to buy more cakes to distribute to their families, relatives and friends. Despite the hike, they will buy it.”
