Nepal has the potential to become the world's top ginger producing region, raising its position from the its current status, which is fourth place.
Deputy Director of Agriculture, Iswor Prasad Risal, says that it is not simply a matter of increasing production, however, but market intelligence also needs to be improved to increase the international trade potential of the produce.
“There are a few programmes for market promotion of ginger and other agricultural commodities but it is not sufficient,” he said, adding that the Post Harvest Directorate also plans to improve the quality of the ginger to make it more competitive in the international market.
Currently Nepal sits behind India, China and Indonesia, though only India has a viable international presence in the sector.
