An Italian rainbow trout farm has received Friend of the Sea (FOS) eco-certification this week, according to a release from FOS.
The site, “Fattoria del Pesce,” is in the middle of the Natural Park of the Ticino Valley, and uses facilities built in the 1950s. The certification follows an independent assessment of the farm’s sustainability.
“We know that Friend of the Sea certification represents an important added value for our production and we are proud to have achieved a positive evaluation against all audit requirements,” said Maurizio Grispan, the farm’s director.
The farm uses a “flow-through” system, using natural springs in the area to feed long, shallow tanks where farmers rear the trout.
“Every single stretch of water affected by the production process was analyzed and the results showed that the impact is to be considered extremely low,” FOS said in its release.
The assessment also found other systems in place, including a system of grids to prevent birds from being injured.
