Modified atmosphere (ATM) bags are among the various solutions offered by Retarder, a Piedmontese company dealing with packaging and technology for the conservation and extension of the shelf-life of fruit and vegetables.
They have been created for the preservation and transportation of fruit and vegetables. Retarder® modified atmosphere extends storability and shelf-life, maintains taste and nutritional values unaltered, reduces wastes during the cold chain and helps cover seasonal gaps.
The produce must be dried before it is placed in Retarder® bags. Subsequently, the air needs to be removed and the bag must be closed with a clamp.
The natural respiration of the produce reduces oxygen levels in the bag. This in turn means that there are higher levels of carbon dioxide, generating the same O2 and CO2 permeability of the bag.
What are the advantages of ATM bags? "There is a reduction in produce respiration and therefore ethylene is no longer active, slowing the ripening process. In addition, nutritional values and the taste of products remains unaltered, so sugar and vitamin levels are preserved," explains the company.
