The Baby Banana (Musa acuminata) is originally from India, China, Malaysia and the Philippines. There are about 70-80 types of bananas in the world. "Bananito" is grown in the Andes of Colombia, an area also known for the production of coffee.
It is smaller in size compared to a traditional banana or plantain. The flavor is sweet and it is particularly appealing to children. It's easy to digest and can be stored in the refrigerator.
The fruit has a thin skin, thin and smooth, rapidly changing color from green to golden yellow when the fruit is mature. It is used, as well as for dessert or fruit salads, also in confectionery for the preparation of sweets and for the decoration of special buffets.
Imported from Colombia still green, it is transported by air to Milan Malpensa. Upon arrival, the baby banana is matured naturally, keeping it at a temperature of at least 13 degrees.
Yellowing lots are selected and sent for packaging at Spreafico, for sale to the channel of the Italian retail chains
As reported by Claudio Scandella, Category manager at Spreafico for exotic and ethnic products, "Bananito is not to be confused with other mini bananas available on the market. Its pasty consistency is less than that of a traditional banana and its exotic and warm taste encounters has many fans.
"We import weekly 3,000 kg, which are distributed through the major supermarket chains. We carry out sample analysis on the product so that it meets the highest quality standards in force in Europe," says Scandella.
