When you think of fast food, you usually think of burgers, fries, hot dogs, pizza, and tacos. Red in Kendall carries most of those items, but it also serves a wide array of options for all types of appetites.
The Mex is a burger topped with jalapeños, pepper jack cheese, pico de gallo, and cilantro sauce made in house. Then there's the Super Crazy Burger, topped with numerous sauces, lettuce, tomato, onion, ham, and cheese. And the Red Burger gets topped with Gorgonzola and bacon, plus lettuce, tomato, and onion. All burgers weigh a half-pound, cost less than $6, and come with fries.
When it comes to hot dogs, the Colombian influence is obvious. Hot dogs can come topped with pink sauce (ketchup mixed with mayonnaise), pineapple sauce, picnic sticks, pico de gallo, ketchup, mayo, and/or mustard. We had the Red Dog, which came with all of the above, minus pineapple sauce. For less than $4, you get an enormous wiener and an order of fries.
We also tried some chicken pinchos as well as beef, and the meat was well-seasoned and tender. Pinchos come with a choice of two sides, fries, salad, tostones, or rice. The pinchos plates cost less than $6.
The most expensive menu item is just under $8: a churrasco steak served with fries, rice, salad, and a drink.
One item blew us away. Red's arepas ($2.59 to $3.75) come stuffed with cheese and a choice of shredded beef, chicken, cheese, tuna, or ham 'n' cheese. The fillings were phenomenal, and the arepa itself was buttery, soft on the inside, and crisp on the outside -- simply the best we've ever had.
There are also some healthier items, such as wraps, salads, and bowls. Red Restaurant on Bird Road serves simple, tasty fast food. Try it. But beware: This hopping Kendall spot was packed during lunchtime when we sampled several menu items.
