The Coca-Cola Co. is seeking to patent what it says is a novel sugar-free beverage with fiber.
In a U.S. patent application made public today, Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) says there's a need for healthier frozen carbonated and non-carbonated beverages. It notes that fiber is an essential component to the human diet that is derived primarily from plants. In recent years, fiber supplements and/or food additives have been marketed to consumers for a variety of nutritional and health purposes.
The new drink can be frozen and can be used in any known beverage dispenser.
"The fiber content of the sugar-free beverage concentrate is present in a weight/volume percentage of between about 0.1% and about 30%, preferably between about 1% and about 25%, more preferably between about 10% and about 25% and even more preferably between about 15% and about 25%," the application notes.
It can be either carbonated or non-carbonated. Non-carbonated varieties could include coffee, cocoa, tea, daily, fruit juice, vegetable juice, pulp containing and non-pulp containing fruit flavored beverages, sports beverages and flavored water.
