Core Tip: The meat processing plant and wholesaler at the centre of a 50,000 tonne meat product recall because of concerns over contamination with horse meat has been declared bankrupt.
According to a report on Dutch rural radio KTIC, a judge in the court in Den Bosch declared the owner Willy Selten’s meat plant bankrupt on Tuesday.

The business was declared bankrupt on the request of the Dutch labour union which claimed the workers had not been paid and a declaration of bankruptcy would allow them to claim unemployment benefits.

According to the report, Mr Selten is also appealing against the recall, which he has described as overreacting and unnecessary.

A ruling on the appeal is expected this week.
