Blue Fish, a new European Association that promotes sustainable fishing that was launched earlier this year, used the 2013 European Seafood Exposition as the launching pad to announce its initial goals. Blue Fish intends to share knowledge, promote best practices for fishing techniques, increase communication, establish common fisheries policies and help harvesting and processing companies develop.
The association’s goals were presented by Olivier Le Nezet , president, and Claude Allan, VP. One of Blue Fish’s first actions has been to contract with PwC – Fish Pass to conduct an independent study of the deepwater fishing industry and its impact on Boulogne and Lorient. The results of the study will be presented at a seminar in Edinburgh on 15 and 16 May.
A separate study will be conducted to assess the direct, indirect and induced economic and social impact of a ban on trawling for deepwater species. The study will look at the impact on the industries in Europe, Iceland, Norway and the Faroe Islands.
