Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), an India-based milk co-operative operating under the Amul brand, is set to establish a new dairy plant in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, with an investment of INR1.5bn ($25.12m) .

The dairy co-operative has initiated buying milk from local farmers through its member union dairy - Banas Dairy.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has also invited Amul to set up more plants to revive the cooperative dairy sector in the state.

Banas Dairy chairman Parthi Bhatol was quoted by The Times of India as saying that they are setting up cooperatives to boost the local milk procurement network.

"The plant at Kanpur will have initial processing capacity of ten LLPD which can be further expanded," added Bhatol.

"We are waiting for the UP government's response as the government has promised us land for the project."
