Data released Monday showed the amount of orange juice sold in the US fell to its lowest level in at least 11 years, a trend that is expected to weigh on prices.
Total domestic retail sales of orange juice fell 4.2% to 39.89 million gallons in the four weeks ended June 8, from the previous four-week period, according to Nielsen data published by the Florida Department of Citrus.
It was the smallest volume of orange-juice sales since the four weeks ended Jan. 19, 2002, the oldest comparable data provided by the Florida Department of Citrus.
Revenue from domestic orange-juice sales fell 3.4% to $248.3 million in the four weeks ended June 8, the report said. The average price per gallon rose to $6.22, from $6.17 in the previous four-week period.
Orange-juice sales have been steadily declining from their peak in January, when flu season prompted consumers to seek sources of vitamin C and buy 51.22 million gallons of the juice.
