Stop & Shop stores in the New York Metro area will discontinue its policy of providing rebates for shoppers who bring their own bags effective July 7.
Stop & Shop for several years had provided a 5-cent discount for every reusable bag customers filled at checkout, a policy the company said has helped save millions of paper and plastic bags. In a letter to shoppers, Don Sussman, president of Stop & Shop’s New York Metro division, said that “the program has reached a plateau in its effectiveness to encourage shoppers to use their own bags.”
Stop & Shop said it would put support behind other programs to reduce environmental impact, including making a $10,000 donation to The Nature Conservancy on Long Island.
Stop & Shop’s New England division made a similar policy change late last year.
