The Lurgashall Winery, which nestles in a 38-acre estate beneath Blackdown Hill, the highest point in West Sussex, is set to open a new distillery Blackdown Spirits in 2014.

The winery, which is known for its Silverbirch wine and mead, has already started making its own artisan spirits, including gin, vodka and vermouth in Cambridgeshire.

Owners Sarah and Nathan Thompson plan to open the new distillery onsite by next year.

Sarah was quoted by Harpers as saying that it is a natural route for them to go down as they have been using gin and vodka at the winery for 40 years to make liqueurs, sloe gins and elderberry Port, among other things.

"We don't use any grapes at all," Sarah added.

Nathan, who has a background in plumbing and heating, plans to build the still for the new distillery.

The winery makes gin by using Silverbirch sap, which is added after distillation to enhance freshness of gin.

Sarah told the website that it is readily available to them as they sit on 40 acres of Silverbirch trees.

"It has a really clean flavour to it - it was a natural thing for us to look at," Sarah added.

The winery currently has around 200 bottles of each spirit and is on the verge of signing a deal with a distributor.
