Sales of fresh fruit and vegetables increased over the last year, with berries being the most sold in the fruit category.

The dollar amount of sales for fresh fruit increased almost 10 percent over the last year, according to a report by Gruszka Consulting based on data sampled from stores across the United States. The amount of total pounds sold over the last 52 weeks also increased by almost five percent.

Berries were the best sellers among fruit, and berry sales accounted for over 18 percent of total fruit sales over the last year. In that same period, berry sales also grew by over eight percent. While bananas were the most sold in terms of weight, they were second to berries in terms of sales, with 12.5 percent of all fruit sales attributed to bananas.

Fresh vegetable sales also increased over the last year, but with an increase of 4.7 percent, the growth in sales was about half of that for the fruit sector. The biggest seller among vegetables over the last year was lettuce. Accounting for 15.5 percent, lettuce sales were the biggest part of total vegetable sales. Sales growth for lettuce over the last year was a little under seven percent.
