Ardagh Group, a Luxembourg-based metal and glass packaging company serving the food and beverage industry, plans to establish a can manufacturing plant in Roanoke County, Virginia with $93.5m investment.
Of the total investment, $80m will be used for equipment and the remaining in real estate.
Ardagh Group has acquired a 525,000ft² former Hanover Direct distribution center at 5022 Hollins Road. It is currently renovating the cavernous building to accommodate manufacturing of 4.5 million cans per day.
The plant is expected to generate 96 new jobs.
Ardagh metal packaging business CEO James Willich said that the company has selected Roanoke County facility based on business tax structure, cost of living, infrastructure, logistic advantages, proximity to its customer and the availability of skilled labor.
"We look forward to beginning operations by the third quarter of 2014," Willich added.
Virginia Governor McDonnell has approved a $750,000 grant from the Governors Opportunity Fund for the plant. Roanoke County will provide a performance based grant of up to $2.45m.
