Coffee production in Peru is expected to decline by 25% in 2013 due to the outbreak of the roya disease in coffee-growing regions.
Roya, a plant-eating fungus, has affected crops in some Latin American countries and made its way to Peru.
Coffee growers in Peru were concerned about this and urged the government to take adequate measures to replace their crops.
Peru government has declared a state of emergency in 11 coffee-growing regions, including Cusco, Junin and San Martin and plans to take immediate actions to control the spread of the disease.
Agriculture Minister Milton Von Hesse said that this year's coffee output will decline a 25% to 30%, a bit higher than previous estimates and the government will replace the crops of the farmers.
"This is an opportunity to promote changes in the plantations," Von added.
National Coffee Chamber of Peru has projected that the country's coffee production will be six million quintals in 2013.
