Core Tip: One way Lowes Foods celebrated Labor Day weekend was by showcasing local vendors.
One way Lowes Foods celebrated Labor Day weekend was by showcasing local vendors.

On Saturday, Aug. 31, shoppers could sample foods from more than one dozen local food and beverage producers, including Kalo gluten-free foods, James Foods and Biltmore Wines.

“Experience locally grown and made products,” Lowes stated in promotional materials.

The in-store event is the latest of many local food promotions Lowes has sponsored. In May, the retailer hosted a local foods Twitter party during which it talked about its local farmers and local food assortment. Shoppers could join the party by using the hashtag #LocallyGrown.

Local foods are a growing part of Lowes Foods. The company is committed to the “NC 10%” campaign, an initiative to encourage North Carolinians — consumers, organizations, agencies and businesses — to spend 10% of their food budget on locally grown and produced foods. From May through August, Lowes sources over 20% of produce from farmers within the state.

The retailer also posts photos of local food vendors on social media. In July, for instance, it posted photos on Facebook of bee raisers Barry and Jill Harris. The honey is sold in Lowes’ Wilmington area stores.
