Mercadona is to automate picking of fresh food products at its new distribution centre in Abrera, Barcelona.
With the help of Witron's Order Picking Machinery (OPM) technology, the new logistics hub will supply more than 280 Mercadona stores in the region of Catalonia in north-east Spain with fresh meat and dairy products.
A total of 18 Witron Case Order Machines (COM) will be implemented as well as 36 aisles of storage space for 162,000 trays and a five-aisle pallet depot.
The new centre operates 24 hours a day, 6 days a week.
Earlier this year, the retailer already implemented Witron’s technology at its frozen food facility at the same site.
Employing 74,000 people, Mercadone operates 1,411 stores, and is currently considered the fastest growing company in Spain.
