Bimbo Bakeries USA plans to shutter its baking plant in Elk Grove and shift production to other facilities by Nov. 8. The plant makes bread products and tortillas under brand names such as Entenmann, EarthGrains, Oroweat, Thomas and Tia Rosa.
Joe Dangelmaier, regional vice-president of operations for B.B.U., said the Elk Grove plant no longer has the manufacturing capability to be competitive. The plant employs 128.
“This was a difficult decision because of the highly engaged team of associates at the Elk Grove Bakery,” Mr. Dangelmaier said. “However, after careful analysis and consideration, it was apparent that the facility did not have the infrastructure and manufacturing capability to compete in the marketplace.”
It is the second facility closing announced by B.B.U. in the past month. In August, B.B.U. said it will close its baking plant in Easton, Pa., by the end of the year. The plant, which employs 200, makes hamburger and hot dog buns.
The closing of the B.B.U. facility in Elk Grove also will be the second major bakery closing in the Sacramento area in less than a year. Last fall, the Hostess Brands Inc. closed its plant after it went out of business.
