There has been an influx of Northern Territory mangoes into the Sydney markets this week but prices remain strong. Premium mangoes are selling for about $80 a tray and even second-grade fruit is getting around $40 a tray.
Chris Cope from the Sydney markets says mangoes that arrived this morning were excellent. "We've seen the first real quantity of the really good fruit come in," he said. "About 30 pallets came in today, which isn't a lot for the Sydney markets, and from all reports the market is going to be very light this year."
Mr Cope says the mango season is off to slow start and strong prices are likely to stay around for a couple of weeks.
The Territory is expecting a smaller mango crop this year.
The crop forecast predicted a crop of between three million and 3.5 million trays, down from over four million in 2012. However, that forecast may be reduced again, after reports of fruit drop in the major growing region of Katherine.
