Australian baked goods manufacturer Wholeberry Folk have launched a range of cupcake and biscuit mixes, made from spelt flour and sweetened with fruit.
Wholeberry Folk says its baking mixes use “25 per cent less guar than other leading brands”.
“As parents we have a moral obligation to feed our children healthy food, so when it comes to sweet treats we created an alternative,” said Karen Sharman and Dom Mason, owners of Wholeberry Folk. “We wanted to share the mixes with people all over the country,” they said.
Wholeberry Folk said it wanted to “champion the benefits of spelt flour”, which it uses in its recipes instead of white wheat flour. The Company said spelt is a “highly nutritious grain” and a “source of vitamins and minerals including Bvitamins and iron”. According to Wholeberry Folk, the gluten in spelt is “more soluble than the gluten in wheat and is gentler on digestion”.
Wholeberry Folk said its range is vegan-friendly if coconut oil and a milk alternative are used instead of butter and cow’s milk by consumers when baking.
“Our recipes use simple ingredients just as you would find in your own pantry,” Ms Sharman said. “Nothing unnecessary and nothing unknown. We want to promote the goodness of spelt and real fruit in baking and show the public that they have choices,” she said.
The Wholeberry Folk cupcakes are available in Banana Split, Strawberry Milkshake and Blueberry Frost flavours, and the biscuit range includes a Cinnamon Raisin flavour. The baking mixes are available in Woolworths supermarkets nationally from November 2013 for RRP $6.49.
