another decoration method for round and rectangular tins which is already known for plastic and cardboard packaging. Hoffmann has developed this method for application to tinplate. It complements the established procedures like offset printing, coating with matt and glossy effects and relief embossing."3D coating" is applied in one step on a flexoprint coating unit. The special coating adheres to the pretreated tinplate surface. After drying, the painted body is increased, which causes a special visual and tactile experience. With “3D coating”, both structures and different patterns can be produced. Highlighting only certain areas is possible as well. It allows a completely new appearance and generates attention on the shelf.
Prototypes of 3D coated tins were first shown at the tobacco trade show Inter-tabac, in late September in Dortmund and then at Luxe Pack in Monaco, at GTNF in Capetown and at World Tobacco in Hamburg. The decoration process is aimed at manufacturers of high quality branded products in the segments of tobacco, foods and sweets, who would like to upgrade their packaging appearance. Hoffmann is currently running first tests with customer samples.
