Promotional events across retailers in the U.S. are planned to celebrate the arrival of Italian pears, after trade barriers were lifted this fall.
The trade agreement is a great opportunity for both consumers and producers, said Federico Milanese, director of the Centro Servizi Ortofrutticoli, which represents the European Flavors brand, in a news release.
“American consumers are becoming increasingly careful about what they eat, more appreciative about the Mediterranean diet, and more attracted to our products on account of their quality,” Milanese said, in the release.
Exporters hope to distribute a thousand tons of produce, including Abate Fetel pears, to the U.S. East Coast by the end of the year. In-store promotion events, activities and a smartphone app offering information to raise awareness of and promote recipes “using the extraordinary characteristics of fruit and vegetables grown following the best European traditions” are in the works.
