Italian manufacturer Gruppo Francia has reduced the packaging weight of Aldi’s private label ‘Cucina’ mozzarella cheese by half, after switching to the SuperLight pot from RPC Superfos.

Lighter packaging and reduced carbon footprint were the top priorities when the German supermarket giant, responding to customer demand, asked its supplier to source a new pack.

The SuperLight pot is less than half the weight of its predecessor, meaning a significant reduction of the total costs for the packaging.

Because SuperLight is made of a single material, polypropylene, it is easier to recycle. Another positive aspect is that SuperLight can be decorated using in-mould labelling to deliver a high quality image.

Fabrizio Francia, owner of Gruppo Francia, explains: "There were two major factors in favour of SuperLight- the opportunity to have the Cucina label displayed immaculately on the pot and the reduced amount of virgin polypropylene per unit.

"We have worked with RPC Superfos for many years and we know that we get quality and innovation. The SuperLight pot allows for substantial weight savings which leads to a more cost efficient packaging solution. Also the CO2 emissions connected to the packaging have decreased."

Aldi reports that Cucina mozzarella in the Superlight pot is already delivering good sales figures.

Gruppo Francia is a family-owned business specialising in mozzarella and has three factories, including one in Germany. As well as supplying major supermarket chains in Europe with mozzarella products, Gruppo Francia is an official supplier to the Association of Italian Pizza Makers.
