J.S.B. Industries has acquired Perham, Minn.-based SunWise Foods, L.L.C., a privately-owned maker of crustless sandwiches made with SunButter (sunflower seed spread), on whole wheat bread, with grape jelly. J.S.B. Industries makes fresh frozen bakery products under the Muffin Town, Smart Choice, Aesops Bagels and Madeline’s Gourmet Cookie brands
According to J.S.B., SunWise’s peanut-free sandwich alternative is distributed to schools, food service providers and retailers across the United States.
“SunWise gives families an excellent substitute for foods that include peanuts, tree nuts and other allergens, without sacrificing the peanut butter flavor of a sandwich that is the cornerstone of the American lunch for children,” J.S.B. said. “Each sandwich is individually wrapped to protect the nut-free integrity for consumers.”
Jack Anderson, president of J.S.B., called SunWise sandwiches “a perfect complement” to J.S.B.’s Muffin, Muffin Top, Snack’N Loaf, Bagel, Cornbread and Cookie Dough lines. SunWise sandwiches will be produced in J.S.B.’s peanut-free facility.
The SunButter sunflowerseed spread used in the sandwiches is made by SunGold Foods, Horace, N.D., a subsidiary of Red River Commodities. Red River Commodities, in turn, is owned by Amsterdam Commodities N.V. (Acomo), based in Rotterdam.
“The purchase of SunWise will enable all of our customers to receive wider access to this popular sandwich,” Mr. Anderson said. “It will also enable us to expand on our product lines to include a quality lunch entree that meets the nutrition and dietary requirements in schools and on family tables across the United States.”
J.S.B. operates two kosher, peanut-free baked goods manufacturing plants: one at its headquarters in Chelsea, Mass., and a new facility in Lawrence, Mass.
