Swedish retailer, Coop, has decided to create a new container for its frozen berries, Invercote Bio, a fibre-based plate coated with bioplastic.
The bioplastic makes the packaging environmentally sustainable, as it is compostable. However, its cost is higher than the traditional packaging.
Louise König, Coop's sustainability manager, explained that the decision to create a new sustainable container wasn't very unusual, as they were trying to incorporate sustainability in all areas of the company, and that it was fully in line with company policies.
The berry container is part of the company's fair trade, anti-allergic, organic products line.
The company's goal was to develop a package that excelled when compared to the typical rectangular boxes and that complied with Änglamark's environmental profile.
Invercote Bio will soon be available. Meanwhile the companies will use the Mater-Bio bioplastic from the Italian company Novamont.
