In the EU 90 million tons of food is thrown away annually. The European Parliament therefore wanted to make 2014 the year against the waste of food. However, nothing has come of this, according to the Austrian newspaper "Die Presse" on its website.

At the beginning of 2012 the European Parliament announced that it wanted to put a stop to the waste of food, to be exact they wanted to decrease the wastage by half come 2025. By means of campaigns in 2014 extra attention should have been paid to the theme, especially amongst pupils and students. A nice logo with the slogan 'Stop Food Waste' and an advertising spot has already been produced. Nevertheless the plans were finally postponed together with the planned change of the minimal sell-by date. "As 2014 is an election year we have chosen to focus on the EU-elections", Huberta Heinzel of the information service of the European Parliament comments.
