Doherty’s, the NSausageorthern Irish meat processor, is to supply its pork sausages to Casa Westfalia in Girona, one of Spain’s leading food wholesalers. The deal will see Doherty’s branded Traditional Irish Pork Sausages being marketed across Spain.

The agreement with Casa Westfalia is the first business secured by Doherty’s in Spain and follows a recent food presentation of UK food and drink, supported by Invest Northern Ireland’s market representative Lewis McNeice at the British Consulate in Barcelona.

In addition to its traditional recipe Irish pork sausages, Doherty’s which is based in Derry, will be supplying its gluten-free sausages which are proving increasingly popular with shoppers at its main UK customers, Tesco and Asda.

The business in Spain, the company’s first outside the UK and Ireland, was announced by Brian McQuaid, Doherty’s sales manager, who says: “The agreement with Casa Westfalia give us an important foothold particularly in a key target market, the sizeable British and Irish communities in the costas.

“Spain is one of the European markets that we’ve been targeting and our aim will be to build on the relationship with Casa Westfalia to grow sales. Experience gained in Spain will help us as we seek to expand into other European markets.”

Doherty’s is a family-owned and managed company which has a heritage in quality meat processing stretching back over 150 years and six generations.

The company launched its gluten-free pork sausages to meet a growing market demand especially from consumers with coeliac disease.

Casa Westfalia has been distributing German, French, Dutch, Belgian and British food in Spain since 1972. It distributes to the biggest supermarket chains as well as a network of smaller chains, independents, quality restaurants and theme parks in Spain and the Balearic and Canary islands.

The Northern Irish company operates from a modern and BRC Accredited processing plant, producing sausages, minced beef products, bacon, ham and black and white puddings. Ingredients are sourced from a network of local suppliers, ensuring complete traceability.
