World Processing Tomato Congress

After 21 years, the World Processing Tomato Congress will be held in Italy, in Sirmione del Garda, from 8th to 11th June, after previous editions held in Tunisia, Canada, Portugal and China.

Over 500 professionals from the 5 continents will be attending the congress, under the theme "From the field to the consumer's plate: working together to shape the the future for processed tomato products". The Congress is organized by the AMITOM (Association Méditerranéenne internationale de la Tomate), WPTC (The World Processing Tomato Council) and ISHS (International Society for Horticultural Science).

National and international experts will discuss production and consumption forecasts in the different part of the world, sustainability and tomato growing productivity. They will also outline strategies for the future promotion and consumption of tomato products.

An example of quality production is the whole peeled tomatoes, processed almost entirely by ANICAV members in the southern basin, for the enhancement of which the Association is working to get the brand recognition of PGI protection.

The IGP brand, highlighting the characteristics of uniqueness and quality assurance among peeled tomato products, will speed up for an increase in consumption and a recovery in the market .

ANICAV, the largest association representing tomato processors in the world in terms of number of member companies and the amount of processed product, plays an essential role in the organization of the World Processing Tomato Congress promoting the appointment in the Southern Italy.

The Congress represent an important opportunity to bring to the attention of the global players the role of ANICAV members, strongly international and export oriented: associated companies before the other have understood the importance of opening up to foreign markets and in fact around 60% of production is exported to Europe and to the rest of the world.

The new data of ANICAV turnover

During the Congress, in the session "The virtuous factory", will be presented the experience of an associated small company, which will bring its own testimony of a virtuous company in terms of organizational best practices, energy saving and environmental impact , quality of products and processes, issues on which all member companies always are engaged.

During the today's event was presented the new data of the turnover of 110 ANICAV member companies, which, located in 12 regions recorded a turnover of € 3 billion in 2013 , representing 60% of the national turnover of entire productive sector .

The 2013 turnover of the ANICAV members is divided as follows: € 1.9 billion resulting from the processing of tomatoes, 1 billion from the processing of legumes and vegetables and 0.1 billion from the processing of the fruit.

The core business of the associated companies is represented by the production of tomato, representing about 50% of Italian production.

ANICAV members represent 1/4 of the tomato processed in Europe.

The fruits and vegetables sector employs about 12,000 permanent workers and 22,000 seasonal workers, in addition to the labor employed in related industries . The ports of Naples and Salerno enliven every day about 1,500 containers of canned vegetables.

The first Tomato District of South Center Italy

The event held in Angri was also the occasion to announce the conclusion of the constitution of the first Tomato District of South-Center Italy, the only aggregation of the supply chain created by the will of the parties to self-regulate, without a specific provision of law to that effect.

The creation of Tomato District of South Center Italy will make the supply chain more efficient and competitive, and will have the dual aim of creating greater integration between the parties directly involved in production, processing and trading of tomato products (PO and processors) and at the same time the aim of enhancing the image of a strategic productive sector for the entire Italian economy, which is the sector of processed tomato of South-Center Italy.

This important result was achieved thanks to the efforts of ANICAV, of the National Union Organizations of Fruit and Vegetable Producers, of Professional Agricultural Organizations and Labor Unions.

"The contents presented today confirm that ANICAV has an active part in cooperation in international events such as the World Tomato Congress, and that is dynamic and always close to its associates through innovative and strategic initiatives, such as the 'important agreement relating to the first Tomato District of South Center Italy" said Giovanni De Angelis, Director of ANICAV.

"We are very pleased to have had the opportunity to present this important event to the ANICAV members, as we believe that this Association is a protagonist in the representation of the chain of Italian processed tomatoes under the World Tomato Congress" said Rossano Bozzi Brand Manager Fiere di Parma.
