The non-profit International Fishmeal and Fish Oil organization (IFFO) has announced it is allowing non-IFFO members to apply for certification under its standard for responsible practices.
The organization, referring to itself as "the marine ingredients organization," has used its global standard for responsible supply, which it refers to as "IFFO RS," since 2009 to certify its members as producing fishmeal and fish oil in as responsible a manner as possible.
"The IFFO RS standard has got off to an excellent start, but the Board felt that the time had come to widen the ambition of the standard to address the whole global marine ingredients industry," said Andrew Jackson, chairman of the IFFO RS Board of Directors. "These changes should reassure the marine ingredients value chain that products certified to our standard are being responsibly produced and are increasingly available for their use."
The changes allow any fishmeal and fish oil factory to apply for certification. IFFO will also appoint "at least one" additional certification body to help with processing new applicants. Right now, the IFFO only uses one body, SAI Global, for this task.
