WikiPearl is an exciting new edible packaging that is sure to lower the damage food packaging has on the environment.

WikiCells edible packaging was designed by Harvard professor David Edwards, designer François Azambourg and biologist Don Ingber two years ago.

Now following years of research and development, food scientists have introduced WikiPearl to the world.

The bite-sized pieces of food are wrapped in plastic-free packaging, which are not only protecting the food but are also edible and biodegradable.

The packaging was developed using a “protective electrostatic gel formed by harnessing interactions between natural food particles, nutritive ions and a polysaccharide”, explained the researchers.

The WikiFood technology protects the wrapped food or drink from exposure to unnatural materials or chemicals.

WikiPearl skins also offer protective coatings against water loss.

The packaging could also be used as carriers of nutrition in the future.

WikiPearls are now available in a selection of Whole Foods stores in Massachussetts in the US.
