The Indian government on Friday urged people not to panic over rise in prices of food items, saying there are enough stocks.
"There has been a record production of onions and potatoes, so there is no shortage of these goods. This is not an issue of scarcity. It is a supply side issue," Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told the media in the national capital.
The finance minister's remarks came after he held a meeting with Food Ministers of all states in the Indian capital.
He said "Earlier, when a panic situation was created and onion prices reached 80 to 100 Indian rupees per kg, the government would intervene, but this time, the government anticipated the situation and intervened."
In spite of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assurance to the country that his priority is to control inflation, prices of commodities such as potatoes, onion, rice, pulses and milk have been on the rise.
