Bacardi has launched a series of environmentally friendly bottles as part of a programme called Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future.
A notable example of the new line is the bottle of Bacardi Classic Cocktails, which now weighs 30-per-cent less than it did a few years ago. Its production results in lower carbon-dioxide emissions than that of the previous bottle.
Another is the Bacardi rum bottle, which is used for the company's Party Drinks set. It is made of 100-per-cent recyclable PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic – the same plastic material used for bottled water. It also needs less energy to produce than glass, and reduces both transportation costs and fuel emissions.
Bacardi believes that PET is better suited to outdoor occasions. “Since glass should not be used around the pool, on a boat or at many public events, we redesigned the Bacardi Party Drinks packaging and were able to reduce the weight by 90 per cent using PET,” explains Roger Van Dusen, manager of global packaging development for Bacardi.
“Sustainability is truly a part of the Bacardi DNA, embedded way back from our founding in Cuba,” he added. “The passion we have is a driving force for our environmental efforts to this day.”
