Sample of smoked pork neck slices produced by Kumanovo company with the name of “Extra Mein” has been tested positive for listeria bacteria, Macedonia’s Commission for Infectious Diseases of Macedonian Ministry of Health released on Wednesday.
This listeria bacteria found in the Kumanovo company’s product is 98 percent match with the bacteria genotype of those infected eight patients in Macedonia, four of whom have been taken life.
Steps forward for locating the source of the disease will be taken and epidemiological tests will be made by professional institutions, said Zvonko Milenkovic, chair of the Commission for Infectious Diseases of Macedonian Ministry of Health.
All of that smoked pork neck slices products are requested to be withdrawn from the shelves by the end of this day and sale of the products is postponed until relevant processed plant and machines has been tested for the presence of listeria, said director of Macedonian Food and Veterinary Dejan Runtevski. Products to be sold in the future will definitely be tested, added Runtevski.
Listeriosis is a bacterial infection commonly caused by consuming listeria bacteria contaminated food such as processed meat, unpasteurized milk and diary products and insufficiently washed fruits and vegetables.
The immunocompromised such as the elderly, pregnant women and newborns are vulnerable to listeriosis which can cause infections of the central nervous system (meningitis, meningoencephalitis, brain abscess, cerebritis) and bacteremia.
The efficient way of prevention includes washing raw food thoroughly as well as reheating leftover or ready-to-eat foods until steaming hot.
