Core Tip: The second case of African swine fever (ASF) detected in domestic pigs was reported in Lithuania on Wednesday.
The second case of African swine fever (ASF) detected in domestic pigs was reported in Lithuania on Wednesday.

According to the Food and Veterinary Service of Lithuania, the ASF virus was found in two pigs in a private farm in Utena district.

All necessary measures have been taken to prevent the virus from spreading, according to the service.

“The monitoring and safety zones within a radius of 3 km and 10 km around the epicenter have been set,” the agency said in a statement.

According to Jonas Milius, head of the service, the second case was found 18 km away from Idavang farms in Ignalina district, where the first case of ASF was registered last month.

Officials from Utena municipality and the government will decide on whether to declare a state of emergency in Utena in the coming days, according to the Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Environment.

It would be the eighth district in which an emergency is declared due to the threat of ASF.

The first case of ASF was found on all Danish-owned farms in Lithuania's Ignalina district late July. Around 20,000 pigs were culled soon after.

Authorities in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland have agreed on establishing joint working group and have asked the European Commission for financial support to fight the spread of ASF.
